Scarlett Johansson (born November 22 1984 New York City New York, U.S.) American actress and singer whose acting versatility earned her praise in a variety of genres from period drama to action and thriller. Johansson was the child of a filmmaker as well as an architect. She was raised by New York City. Her twin brother Hunter as well as her mother were the youngest siblings. From a young age she discovered a love for acting and began auditioning commercials at the age of seven. Soon after she enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and afterwards took classes at the Professional Children's School in Manhattan for further training in her craft. In her early years she appeared in Sophistry together with Ethan Hawke and made her movie debut at Rob Reiner's North in 1994. Johansson played the lead role in Just Cause (1995), prior to her breakthrough by starring in Manny & Lo - a tale about two sisters who are orphans that get away. The Horse Whisperer (1998) Johansson's role, which is a teenaged girl with disfigurement, was hailed by the critics. In the following years, she gained fame for her role as the cynical teenage Rebecca on the film Ghost World.
